Self-discipline centers around the topic no one wants to talk about – directing our impulses and desires. Our desires are wild by nature and we have to discipline ourselves at the deepest level to produce change. Often we exert a little external force to bring this about; two examples of classic disciplines are Bible reading and prayer. These disciplines are used to provide a redirect for the heart. We don’t do disciplines to check a list on a behavior but rather we engage in discipline to discipline the impulses and desires of the heart. To direct the motive. This level of self-discipline is often hard to grasp when we are young in Christ, but the older we get the more we get to know the sinfulness of our heart, our mind, and our soul needs discipline in God’s Word.
